Dr. Trina Hazzah, a veterinarian who specializes in the use of cannabis to treat dogs, reported on the case of a dog named Hammer who used cannabis with success against lymphoma, bladder, and oral cancers. The most notable symptom was Hammer’s eye being shut most or all of the time. The Jack Russel terrier received targeted conventional cancer treatment for 5-6 months, but it proved ineffective, as the oral and bladder cancer worsened while the lymphoma remained unchanged.
Given that the conventional therapy was not working on its own, small doses of THC and CBD were added to the treatment. Remarkably low doses of 1mg THC and 1mg CBD twice per day were administered. Within 2-3 weeks, Hammer’s eye finally began to open, and in just 1-2 weeks after that, the oral tumor had completely disappeared, with Dr. Hazzah not being able to locate it at all.
The likelihood that cannabis had an impact is relatively strong, given that about half a year of conventional treatment alone produced no effect. Once cannabinoids were added, it took just about a month for one of the tumors to completely disappear. Preclinical evidence shows that cannabinoids can synergize with both chemotherapy and radiation to improve their effectiveness against killing cancer, so this may have been what happened here.
Dr. Hazzah is also the co-founder of the Veterinary Cannabis Society, which is working to ensure the safe and effective use of cannabis in pets.
